Chapter 5 – Slipping Out

The rest of the day was filled with explanations to the Duke and Duchess, flashes sent to our moms and King George while Ingr tended to the people who were ill from drinking the water from the river and well with her healing magics. Then Shanicia, Commander of the Junior Regiment met with the local chapter to share the news and developments as well as new programs for them.

It was really inspiring to me that she knew each by name, and always made eye contact when speaking with them. Making them feel and understand that what they were doing was important. I couldn't have handed the reins to a better person when I had to step down when I became a Squire.

To her credit, Duchess Aisha was incensed about the Weavers, and the way her eyes burned in a controlled rage reminded me a lot of the Harbinger of Wexbury, my mother, Lady Celeste. It was that same intensity and feeling that you were in the presence of an apex predator. While Duke Rojah was an imposing man who was no doubt a formidable and skilled combatant one wouldn't wish to cross steel with on the battlefield, it was easy to see that Aisha was the more dangerous one of the two.

She had hissed low, “These reprehensible people will be brought to justice, mark my words.” And the Duke only stood at her shoulder to solemnly nod his agreement, having just a bit more restraint of his emotions. They didn't pound at my mental wall as sharply as his wife's.

I mean, I know Shan was afraid of them and all, but they were sort of her parents once upon a time, would their deaths leave an emotional scar on her?

I suddenly felt my age, a teen not knowing if I had done the right thing. I've never wished harder that mom was here to take over the situation. She always knew what the right thing to do was.

By the time we ate last meal, the Weavers still hadn't been located. It was as if they knew they were being hunted and had gone to ground somewhere. We chose to eat in the lavish suites they had assigned to us. And we made all the guards stay in the corridors, only Aunt Sara was in the rooms somewhere with us as we couldn't stop her if we wished.

I went over the flashes from both Highland and Templar Hall, as well as copies of the flash conversations between our mothers and King George and Queen Everly. Mom was insistent that the children were made safe above all else, and she had stated, “As the Weavers are of the Altii,
